What can IVF treat?

About Infertility & IVF

Common Causes Of Infertility That Can Be Treated With IVF

Ovulation Disorders

A small gland at the base of the brain called the pituitary gland controls ovulation. Defects in hormone production and the timing of their Release by the pituitary result in ovulation defects. Common causes of ovulatory dysfunction include PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), Hypothalamic Amenorrhea and Obesity. This is the most common cause of infertility, and it is also the easiest to treat.

Fallopian Tube Obstruction

Fallopian Tube Obstruction or blockages can be caused by PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease), Previous Surgery, and Tubal Ligation (Tubal Sterilization). Ectopic Pregnancy, or a pregnancy in the fallopian tube is a common cause of tubal damage. In this case, the risk is high for another ectopic pregnancy. IVF, because it bypasses the fallopian tubes, dramatically rescued the risk of another ectopic pregnancy.

Low Sperm Count

Male Factor including low sperm count and low motility is a leading cause of infertility, and is responsible for 40% of all infertility cases. Common causes of Low Sperm Count are Hormones, Steroid use, Varicocoele, and Reproductive Toxins in our air, food and water. Marijuana is associated with decreased sperm motility and decreased fertilization of the egg.

The best solution

Endometriosis is a condition where the lining of the uterus, or Endometrium, leaves the confines of the uterus and implants in the pelvis around the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the base of the uterus. Symptoms of Endometriosis include Pain with Intercourse, Pain with Periods, Premenstrual spotting, and Infertility. Because endometriosis affects the fluid around the ovaries and also in the tubes, infertility results. The treatment of choice is IVF because it bypasses the fallopian tubes.

Age Related Infertility

Many couples wait too long or have life events that delay their childbearing. Egg Donor

Decreased Ovarian Reserve

Women are born with all they eggs they will ever have in their entire life, they cannot make any new ones. When a woman runs out of eggs, she enters menopause. This makes it more difficult for women in their late 30’s and early forties to become pregnant. Additionally, as a result of the age related decrease in egg quality, the risk for Pregnancy loss and Chromosome problems in the baby increase as well.

Unexplained Infertility

This is a diagnosis of exclusion, what is left after a complete workup of both partners has been performed, and no identifiable cause of infertility can be found. It consists of problems with Fallopian Tube transport of the egg and early embryo, failed fertilization of the egg by the sperm, poor embryo growth, and failure of the embryo to implant in the uterus. A direct benefit of IVF is that it brings the factors into the light in the IVF lab, where they can be identified and corrected. IVF is the treatment of choice for unexplained infertility.
